Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday expressed concern over the recent protest at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), calling the incident “shocking” for the entire country.

Gupta was referring to the January 5 protest where some students allegedly raised slogans supporting “terrorists” and demanded bail for those accused in the 2020 Delhi riots conspiracy case, including former JNU students Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam, after the Supreme Court denied their bail.

Addressing reporters on National Youth Day, the Chief Minister said it was unfortunate that students resorted to what she described as “undignified” slogans targeting the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, undermining the values of the nation.

“The whole country is shocked by JNU-like incidents where bail is demanded for riots accused and terrorists are supported. It is unfortunate that students raise slogans against the nation,” Gupta said.

The Chief Minister urged the youth to recognize their vital role in shaping the country’s future, emphasizing that the nation looks up to them for progress and positive leadership.

Following the protest, Delhi Police registered an FIR on a complaint from the JNU administration, invoking sections 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 353(1) (statements conducing to public mischief), and 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
