The Assam Rifles, in a joint operation with the Customs Department, recovered counterfeit cigarettes worth ₹34 lakh from a godown in Silchar on Tuesday, officials said.

According to an Assam Rifles statement, the seized consignment was being transported through Silchar for further distribution within the state.

The force said it has been working closely with the Customs Department to crack down on the trafficking of counterfeit goods in the region and has been conducting regular operations to disrupt and dismantle such networks.

“This seizure marks a significant milestone in our sustained efforts to curb the circulation of counterfeit goods,” the statement added.

Earlier, the Assam Rifles also recovered 11.062 kg of Methamphetamine tablets, a psychotropic substance, with an estimated international market value of ₹33.186 crore, during a separate operation in Mizoram.

Acting on credible intelligence inputs regarding narcotics trafficking near the Indo-Myanmar border, the Assam Rifles carried out a joint operation with the Mizoram Police in the Kaifang area of Saitual district, an official press release said.

During the operation, suspicious movement was detected near the identified location. A subsequent search led to the recovery of the Methamphetamine tablets. A vehicle used in the operation was also seized.

The recovered contraband and the vehicle were handed over to Mizoram Police, Saitual, for further investigation and legal action, the release added.
