Congress deputy leader in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, on Sunday accused the BJP government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi of attempting to undermine democracy, disrupt Parliament’s functioning and erode long-standing parliamentary conventions.
Speaking after the all-party meeting held ahead of the Winter Session, Gogoi said the Congress pressed for discussions on national security, air pollution, the integrity of the voter list, farmers’ concerns, and foreign policy.
“It appears that the government, under the prime minister and the home minister, is trying to dismantle India’s democratic framework and its parliamentary traditions,” he told reporters.
He said the party sought a detailed discussion on the security situation in the country, especially in light of the recent blast in Delhi. Gogoi alleged that the government was unwilling to allow even a short-duration debate on national security.
He further claimed that the “security of democracy” itself was at risk, pointing to the Election Commission’s conduct. “Before, during and after elections, the EC is acting with bias. There must be a debate on ensuring purity of the voter list,” he added.
The Congress also demanded a discussion on worsening air pollution, Gogoi said. “Economic security is another concern. Farmers are not getting fair prices… and we also need protection against natural disasters,” he noted.
Raising foreign policy issues, he argued that India's decisions appeared overly influenced by other nations. “Some countries object to our oil purchases from Russia. Another is building up its defence, and we are not responding,” he said.

Gogoi affirmed that the opposition was united and did not want Parliament to become a place for praising just one individual. He reiterated his charge that the government intended to “derail Parliament and bury parliamentary traditions.”
