Acclaimed Hollywood cinematographer George Richmond, known for his work on major films including Free Guy and Deadpool & Wolverine, is recovering after undergoing successful surgery following a serious paragliding accident in Himachal Pradesh, officials said on Friday.
The 54-year-old sustained multiple neck injuries when he crashed during a paragliding expedition in Kullu district on June 8.
According to officials, Richmond was part of a five-member group undertaking a long-distance cross-country flight from Bir Billing to the Deo Tibba region when the accident occurred in rugged mountainous terrain near Deo Tibba.
Rescue operation involving IAF
Following the crash, fellow paragliders alerted local authorities, triggering a coordinated rescue effort involving district officials and the Indian Air Force.
Rescuers evacuated Richmond from the difficult terrain and transported him to a safer location before he was airlifted by an IAF helicopter to Kullu for initial treatment.
He was subsequently shifted to the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research> (PGIMER) in Chandigarh on June 9 for specialised care.
Successful surgery
Dr Vijay Goni, Professor and Head of the Department of Orthopaedics at PGIMER, said Richmond underwent surgery on Thursday after being stabilised.
"He has been kept under observation. His vitals are stable and he is recovering," Dr Goni said.
The doctor explained that Richmond had suffered neck injuries at multiple levels due to the fall.
"Basic resuscitation was done and a hard cervical collar was applied at presentation. After the initial process, the surgery was planned for Thursday," he said.
The procedure was carried out by a multidisciplinary team involving trauma, orthopaedic and general surgery specialists.
"It was a combined effort," Dr Goni said, adding that Richmond would remain under close observation for at least 48 hours.
Distinguished Hollywood career
Richmond has built a notable career as a cinematographer on several major Hollywood productions.
Apart from "Free Guy" and "Deadpool & Wolverine", he has frequently collaborated with British filmmakers Matthew Vaughn and Dexter Fletcher.
