Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday announced that Manas National Park has not recorded a single case of rhino or tiger poaching over the past three years, describing the achievement as a major milestone in the state's wildlife conservation efforts.

Sharing the development on social media platform X, Sarma hailed the transformation of the park from a region once plagued by poaching to one where the protection of endangered species has become the norm.

"Zero Rhino and Tiger Poaching in Manas National Park for three straight years," the chief minister wrote.

He said the accomplishment reflects Assam's sustained commitment to safeguarding its rich biodiversity.

"From an era where poaching dominated news headlines to now when zero poaching is the new normal, this feat signifies the relentless efforts Assam has undertaken to preserve our faunal diversity," Sarma added.

Located in western Assam along the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas, Manas National Park spans around 850 square kilometres and comprises four forest ranges spread across Baksa and Chirang districts.

Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the park is also a designated tiger reserve and one of India's most significant wildlife habitats. It is home to several endangered species, including the one-horned rhinoceros, Bengal tiger, pygmy hog, golden langur and wild water buffalo.

The announcement underscores the success of enhanced anti-poaching measures, intensified surveillance and coordinated conservation initiatives undertaken by the state forest department and wildlife protection agencies in recent years.
