Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing assured Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Myanmar's territory would not be allowed to be used for activities detrimental to India's security interests during wide-ranging talks in New Delhi on Monday.

The discussions covered a broad spectrum of bilateral issues, including trade, investment, defence cooperation, border management, development assistance, energy, healthcare, education and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence.

Briefing reporters after the meeting, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said both sides reaffirmed the importance of preventing the misuse of their sovereign territories against each other's security interests. He noted that the Myanmar president specifically reiterated his country's commitment on this issue.

Myanmar shares a 1,640-kilometre border with India and is a key strategic neighbour, particularly for northeastern states such as Nagaland and Manipur.

The two leaders also discussed the ongoing situation in Myanmar. Misri said Prime Minister Modi raised the issue of Aung San Suu Kyi in the context of the peace process in Myanmar. India reiterated its longstanding position supporting enduring peace, inclusivity and dialogue involving all stakeholders.

India also reaffirmed its support for Myanmar's sovereignty and territorial integrity during the talks.

The visit marks President Aung Hlaing's first trip to India since assuming office after Myanmar's parliamentary elections held in December 2025 and January 2026. He is accompanied by a high-level delegation comprising cabinet ministers, senior officials and business leaders.

Earlier, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval met the Myanmar president and discussed key aspects of bilateral cooperation.

President Aung Hlaing is on a five-day visit to India and is scheduled to travel to Mumbai on June 2 for meetings with business leaders and industry representatives.
