Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump briefly interacted on Tuesday after the traditional family photograph at the 52nd G7 Summit in Evian, France, ahead of the outreach session involving G7 members and invited nations.
Video footage from the summit showed the two leaders exchanging greetings as world leaders assembled following the official group photograph. During the interaction, Trump shook hands with Modi and was seen patting him on the arm.
The exchange marked the first in-person meeting between the two leaders since Modi's visit to Washington in February last year. They were also seated next to each other during the G7 outreach session.
Earlier in the day, French President Emmanuel Macron received Prime Minister Modi at the summit venue before he joined other heads of state and government for the customary group photograph.
The photograph featured several prominent global leaders, including European Council President Antonio Costa, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, among others.
Modi arrived in France on Tuesday to participate in the summit at Macron’s invitation. India’s presence at the gathering marks its 13th participation as a partner country and the seventh consecutive G7 Summit attended by the Prime Minister.
Before reaching France, Modi made a stopover in Geneva, Switzerland, where he met Swiss Confederation President Guy Parmelin as part of his broader European outreach.
On the sidelines of the summit, the Prime Minister is expected to hold a series of bilateral meetings with several world leaders, including Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
A separate meeting between Modi and Trump is also scheduled for June 17. According to the White House, discussions are expected to focus significantly on progress toward a proposed India-US trade agreement.
