Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee president Y.S. Sharmila on Wednesday expressed concern over what she described as a growing attempt by “religious extremist elements” to dilute the spirit of the Indian Constitution and replace it with an alternate vision.

Issuing a statement on the occasion of Constitution Day, Sharmila said there was a concerted effort to target the country’s foundational document and sow social discord. “Those motivated by religious extremism have surrounded the Constitution and are trying to tear it down, with the intention of forcing their own model on the nation,” she alleged.

She reminded that the Constitution stands as a guarantee of dignity, justice, liberty and equal rights to every individual, calling it not just a legal text but a pledge to protect all citizens. Sharmila accused certain forces of attempting to distort historical facts, stoke religious tensions and deprive people of their lawful rights, thereby endangering democratic values.

Highlighting the principle of equality, the Congress leader said that every person—irrespective of wealth or status—is treated the same before the Constitution, which continues to guide India’s progress and purpose.

Sharmila emphasised that the rights of millions of Indians would remain secure so long as the Constitution stays untouched. Defending the document, she said, was a collective duty of the nation.

Reaffirming her own stand, she declared that she would remain at the forefront of the fight to safeguard the Constitution and would not permit any effort aimed at altering it.
