Every year in November the fourth Friday of the month is called black. Its roots lie deeply with Thanksgiving Thursday.

Those who have grown up watching F.R.I.E.N.D.S, Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, Seinfeld and other American sitcoms on television are familiar with the yearly Thanksgiving get-togethers followed by the kick start of the holiday season.

This year Black Friday falls on the 25th and with-it massive sales are also around the corner.

Though these festivities are American in nature they recently have caught up with the millennials and Gen Z for whom this yearly early weekend means letting their heads down with good food and good discounts.

Brands and e-commerce like Nykaa, Flipkart, Amazon, Mama Earth, MCaffiene, Fast&Up, Myntra, Nike, Adidas, Apple, Samsung, and others are offering huge discounts during the Black Friday sale.

How did Thanksgiving start?

It is said to have started in the 16th century when the travelling Pilgrims shared a meal with the Native Americans and later on in a few years' time they celebrated a good harvest after a long drought. It is believed that American President Abraham Lincoln made it a national holiday, it was later decided that every 4th Thursday in November will be celebrated as Thanksgiving day.

What is Black Friday and why is it celebrated?

It is believed by many that the term Black Friday derives from the concept that businesses operate at a financial loss, or are “in the red,” until the day after Thanksgiving when massive sales finally allow them to turn a profit, or put them “in the black.”

Thus the Friday that followed Thanksgiving Thursday was termed as Black Friday as it not only promoted the economy but gave a reason to the masses to shop their heart out.

Following are the some reactions from Twitterati on the ongoing Thanksgivings and Black Friday sales. While some are sharing their buying experience, the brands are showcasing their on-going massive sales.

Some even question its importance and as to why it is relevant in India.

Apart from Thanksgiving and Black Friday, Halloween has also caught up with the millennials, it was celebrated in many parts of India in October.
