“Aeroplane ear” is a common symptom experienced while landing and taking off while seated in an aeroplane.

In most cases, this does not happen because of preexisting conditions so there is no cause for concern if you experience this often during flight trips.

The ear feels discomfort and pain during these times of the journey because they cause sudden changes in the pressure of air around you. One of the functions of the ear is to regulate the pressure of air coming in and going out, but due to the sudden change in this scenario, air flows out or in very quickly, causing your ears to feel a ‘popping’ sensation which then causes relative pain or discomfort.

Some things to keep in mind are that:

·        Respiratory distresses that disrupt ear functions may make this a more uncomfortable experience.

·        Swallowing, yawning, chewing gum and other actions that cause you to stretch your ear cavity may ease this discomfort by helping your ear equalise the pressure in your ears.

·        Wear earplugs or earbuds can also help reduce discomfort.

·        “Aeroplane ear” is usually a short-lasting condition at worst, and a mild irritation that lasts moments, at best.
