Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has emphasised that it is “imperative” for India and China to respect each other’s core interests and translate leadership-level consensus into concrete action to strengthen bilateral ties.
Wang, who is in New Delhi for the BRICS NSA conclave, made the remarks during his meeting with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, according to China’s official Xinhua news agency.
Both leaders, who serve as Special Representatives on the India-China boundary issue, reviewed the progress in normalising relations and discussed steps to further stabilise ties.

Highlighting that India is a key neighbour, Wang said bilateral relations are gradually returning to a path of recovery and improvement. He reiterated that the leaders of both nations view each other as partners rather than rivals, forming a crucial strategic understanding that supports stable development of ties.
He further noted that as two major global economies, India and China should adopt a long-term and global perspective while deepening cooperation, particularly among Global South nations.
Wang called for practical implementation of shared consensus, expansion of dialogue mechanisms, and stronger cooperation in areas such as trade, finance, law enforcement, and media. He also stressed the importance of guiding public perception to build a stronger social foundation for bilateral engagement.
On border issues, China’s Foreign Ministry said the situation remains generally stable, with both sides maintaining communication and working towards the next round of Special Representatives talks.
India, meanwhile, described the discussions as “constructive and forward-looking,” with NSA Doval underlining that stable and predictable relations are essential for mutual trust and better understanding.
