Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday praised the artisans of Larnai village in Meghalaya for preserving the region’s renowned GI-tagged black clay pottery tradition, describing the craft as an important symbol of cultural heritage and a vital source of livelihood for local communities.
During her visit to Larnai village in the West Jaintia Hills district, Sitharaman observed the traditional pottery-making process and also tried her hand at shaping clay under the guidance of local artisans.
Commending their craftsmanship, she said the unique pottery tradition reflects Meghalaya’s rich cultural legacy while supporting the economic well-being of artisan families. She stressed the importance of preserving such traditional skills and passing them on to future generations.
The minister noted that sustaining indigenous crafts is essential not only for protecting cultural heritage but also for strengthening rural economies and creating livelihood opportunities.
She also lauded the artisans for continuing the centuries-old practice despite changing social and economic conditions, saying their dedication and skill deserved wider recognition and institutional support.
According to Sitharaman, promoting the GI-tagged craft in broader markets could help expand opportunities for artisans while ensuring the survival of this unique heritage tradition.
Later, the finance minister visited the Nartiang Monoliths, one of the largest collections of megalithic monuments in the region, where officials briefed her on its archaeological and historical significance.
She also inaugurated the newly developed Wahiajer Multi Sports Complex, including its football stadium. Sitharaman said investments in modern sports infrastructure would help nurture young talent and create greater opportunities for youth participation and community development.
