Mahendra Singh Dhoni returned to social media after nearly two years to congratulate the India national cricket team on its historic victory in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup and had a light-hearted message for head coach Gautam Gambhir.
India defeated the New Zealand national cricket team by 96 runs in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad to win the tournament for a record third time.
Dhoni, who attended the final, posted on Instagram congratulating the players, coaching staff and fans worldwide.
“History gets created at Ahmedabad, big congratulations to the team and support staff and to all the fans of Indian Cricket Team worldwide. Such a pleasure to see all of you play,” he wrote.
In his characteristic humorous style, Dhoni also praised Gambhir, known for his intense demeanour.
“Coach Sahab, smile looks great on you. Intensity with smile is a killer combo, very well done. Enjoy guys… Jasprit Bumrah ke baare mein kuch na likhoon toh hi achha hai — champion bowler,” he quipped.
Gambhir responded to the message, saying he was happy to see Dhoni at the stadium during the final.
“And what a reason to smile, great seeing you,” Gambhir commented.
The final saw a dominant all-round performance from India under captain Suryakumar Yadav. Aggressive knocks from Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan and Abhishek Sharma powered India to a record 255/5 after New Zealand opted to field first.
Bumrah then delivered a match-winning spell, taking four wickets for just 15 runs.
