New Delhi
As institutions await the release of the NIRF 2026 rankings, higher education advisory firm Edhitch has introduced a new diagnostic framework aimed at helping universities and colleges identify performance gaps in accreditation and ranking processes.
Developed after analysing seven years of NIRF submissions covering more than 5,000 institutional records across all 13 ranking categories, the framework seeks to address a recurring challenge faced by many institutions—significant investment of time and resources in accreditation exercises without corresponding improvements in rankings, grades or educational outcomes.
The newly launched system includes specialised analytical tools for evaluating performance across individual NIRF parameters as well as a dedicated diagnostic model aligned with the evolving requirements of the NAAC accreditation framework.
Key Findings from the Analysis
According to Edhitch’s research team, a review of institutional data revealed several recurring issues that often affect performance scores.
Among the most common concerns are inaccuracies in faculty eligibility reporting, inconsistencies in student strength data, gaps in research publication attribution, and limited understanding of the scoring methodologies used by accreditation and ranking agencies.
The firm argues that these issues frequently result in institutions failing to realise the full value of their academic and administrative efforts during evaluation cycles.
Significant Overlap Across Frameworks
One of the notable conclusions of the study is the substantial overlap between the data requirements of major quality assessment systems.
Through a detailed comparison of NAAC, NBA and NIRF documentation processes, Edhitch found that nearly 68 per cent of the information, evidence and institutional processes required across the three frameworks are common.
The study suggests that many institutions continue to manage accreditation and ranking exercises separately, leading to duplication of effort, higher administrative costs and inefficient use of resources.
To address this, the firm advocates a more integrated and data-driven approach to institutional quality management.
Focus on Diagnosis Rather Than Documentation
Unlike traditional accreditation support services that primarily concentrate on data collection and report preparation, the Edhitch framework is designed to identify the root causes of institutional performance gaps.
The diagnostic process evaluates current institutional standing, pinpoints areas of weakness and develops strategies for improving outcomes using existing resources rather than relying solely on additional investments.
A typical engagement lasts around four weeks and culminates in three key outputs: identification of performance gaps, a structured improvement roadmap and a resource optimisation plan tailored to institutional priorities.
Building Long-Term Institutional Capability
The firm’s analysis highlights what it describes as a “reactive approach” prevalent across higher education institutions, where accreditation and ranking activities are often treated as periodic compliance requirements rather than ongoing strategic initiatives.
According to Edhitch, institutions that consistently improve their rankings and accreditation outcomes are those that integrate quality enhancement into their year-round planning and decision-making processes.
The company argues that sustained improvements in teaching quality, research performance, student outcomes and institutional reputation depend on continuous monitoring and strategic intervention rather than last-minute preparations ahead of submission deadlines.
Preparing for a Changing Higher Education Landscape
With NAAC moving towards a binary accreditation model, NBA continuing its outcome-based assessment framework and NIRF increasing its emphasis on measurable performance indicators, institutions are expected to face greater scrutiny in the years ahead.
Edhitch believes that data-driven decision-making and strategic resource management will become increasingly important for universities and colleges seeking to strengthen their competitive position.
