Ashok Kumar, a 2006-batch IAS officer of the AGMUT cadre, was on Monday appointed as the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Delhi, the Election Commission announced.

In an official communication, the Commission directed Kumar to take charge with immediate effect and asked the Delhi government to submit a compliance report within a week.

He succeeds R Alice Vaz, who was transferred out of the national capital last month. Vaz had been instructed to continue as the Delhi CEO until a successor was appointed.

Prior to his appointment, Kumar was serving as a secretary in the General Administration Department of the Delhi government. During his earlier stints in the capital, he held several key positions, including secretary (education) and additional commissioner of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.

Kumar has also served in multiple administrative roles across different regions as an AGMUT cadre officer, including postings in Puducherry, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Arunachal Pradesh.

The Election Commission had earlier sought a panel of three IAS officers for the selection of a new chief electoral officer for Delhi.
