The Assam Assembly on Thursday passed the Assam Prohibition of Polygamy Bill, 2025, introducing strict penalties—including up to 10 years’ imprisonment—for entering into a second marriage.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the law is “not against Islam,” citing examples of Turkey and Pakistan to argue that banning polygamy aligns with Islamic principles. The bill applies across Assam except Sixth Schedule areas and Scheduled Tribes.
It proposes seven years’ jail for unlawful polygamy and ten years for concealing a previous marriage. Women in illegal marriages will receive compensation and legal protection, and repeat offenders will face harsher punishment.
Village heads, qazis, or guardians who knowingly facilitate such marriages may face up to two years’ jail and fines up to ₹1 lakh.

Calling it “a strong stride towards justice for our NariShakti,” Sarma said the legislation strengthens women’s rights and accountability.
