Bihar Governor Arif Mohammad Khan on Wednesday said the newly elected Nitish Kumar government has set an ambitious goal of creating one crore jobs over the next five years, expressing confidence that the state is on track to deliver on its employment-focused agenda.

Addressing the joint sitting of the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council — the first after the NDA returned to power — Khan noted that the state had already generated 50 lakh jobs so far. “The government has set a target of creating 1 crore jobs in the next five years,” he said.

The Governor also highlighted the Mukhya Mantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana, launched just before the assembly polls and widely credited for influencing voting patterns. “A sum of ₹10,000 each has been transferred to 1.56 crore women… it will reach those who are yet to receive the benefit,” he added.

Khan thanked the Centre and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for “generous assistance” in accelerating Bihar’s development. He pointed to announcements in the Union Budget such as the formation of a Makhana Board and the establishment of multiple airports, and noted that Modi had visited Bihar several times to inaugurate projects that are now progressing rapidly.

He also referenced welfare measures announced by the state, including 125 units of free electricity, and said the government had taken steps to curb communal tensions by fencing places of worship and graveyards.

Reiterating the NDA’s focus on women’s empowerment, the Governor recalled long-running schemes such as the provision of free bicycles and uniforms for schoolgirls, initiatives that began soon after Nitish Kumar took charge in 2005.
