Senior Suvendu Adhikari on Wednesday said the incoming Bharatiya Janata Party government in West Bengal would take firm action against criminal elements and corruption following the party’s sweeping victory in the state assembly elections.

Speaking to reporters in Nandigram, Adhikari thanked voters for repeatedly placing their trust in him and recalled his electoral successes from the constituency over the years.

He also alleged that BJP workers faced political harassment during the previous regime, claiming hundreds of party supporters were booked in false cases and many were jailed.

Adhikari said the new BJP administration would take all necessary steps against those involved in violence, intimidation and corrupt practices.

Appealing for restraint among party workers, he said no victory processions would be organised over the next few days. Instead, he said, celebrations and thanksgiving programmes would be held after the formation of the new government and only after obtaining official permission from the police.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to visit West Bengal on Thursday evening as the party intensifies preparations for government formation after its historic electoral win.

According to party sources, Shah is scheduled to arrive in the state after attending a cabinet expansion ceremony in Bihar. Soon after his arrival, he is expected to hold an important meeting with senior BJP leaders and members of the party’s core committee.

Sources said the discussions are likely to focus on the prevailing political situation, organisational preparedness, and preparations for the BJP legislative party meeting scheduled for May 8.

Deliberations are also expected on the oath-taking ceremony, cabinet formation, distribution of portfolios, and the governance roadmap for the party’s first government in the state.
