New Delhi
A legislator from the Bharatiya Janata Party has called for renaming Delhi as “Indraprastha” during the ongoing Budget Session of the Delhi Legislative Assembly.
Poonam Sharma, who represents Wazirpur, raised the proposal through a special mention in the House. She urged Chief Minister Rekha Gupta to pass a resolution in the Assembly and forward it to the Centre for approval.
Sharma argued that adopting the name “Indraprastha” would reconnect the national capital with its historical and cultural roots. She described the move as part of a broader “cultural renaissance” and said it would highlight India’s ancient heritage.
The demand echoes a similar proposal made earlier by Praveen Khandelwal, who had written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the issue.
Referring to references in the Mahabharata, Sharma said there is historical and cultural evidence suggesting that the region was once known as Indraprastha, with the name “Delhi” coming into use later.

She added that the proposed name reflects a time when India was considered prosperous and culturally rich, and emphasised that the city’s development should combine modern infrastructure with its traditional heritage and values.
