Chennai father arrested after teen son's motorcycle hits cyclist

A 42-year-old man from Chennai's Pulianthope area has been arrested for allegedly allowing his underage son to ride a motorcycle, which was involved in an accident that claimed the life of a cyclist, police said on Tuesday.

According to the police, 54-year-old Madhura died on July 4 while undergoing treatment at the Government Stanley Medical College Hospital. She had sustained critical injuries after being struck by a motorcycle on Pulianthope High Road on June 28.

The motorcycle was allegedly being ridden by the man's 17-year-old son at the time of the accident.

Police arrested the teenager's father, Amirjan, a resident of Pulianthope, on July 5 for permitting his minor son to operate the two-wheeler. He has since been remanded to judicial custody.

Following the incident, the Greater Chennai Traffic Police urged motorists to drive responsibly and strictly follow traffic regulations, emphasising the importance of protecting human life.

The police also cautioned parents and guardians that they would face strict legal action if they allow minors to ride motor vehicles.
