The counselling process for admissions to undergraduate programmes in Government Arts and Science Colleges and Government-aided institutions across Tamil Nadu commenced on Monday for the 2026-27 academic session, witnessing enthusiastic participation from aspiring students.
The admission exercise covers undergraduate courses offered by 183 Government Arts and Science Colleges and Government-aided institutions affiliated with the University of Madras and various other higher education bodies in the state.
On the opening day, candidates were invited according to their merit rankings and took part in the counselling process by choosing courses and colleges based on their eligibility and preferences. Educational institutions reported a steady flow of students and parents as the admission procedure began.
Speaking about the response, Vijayalakshmi, Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics at Queen Mary's College in Chennai, said Government colleges continue to draw a large number of applicants each year.
"As in previous years, we have received an impressive number of applications for admission to Government Arts and Science Colleges. Students remain eager to pursue higher education through these institutions because of the quality education and opportunities they offer," she said.
She pointed out that the popularity of these colleges has expanded beyond Tamil Nadu, with applications arriving from students across the country.
"We have received applications not only from various districts within Tamil Nadu but also from states such as Odisha and Bihar. This reflects the growing recognition and reputation of Government Arts and Science Colleges in Tamil Nadu," Vijayalakshmi added.
Education experts attribute the sustained demand for these institutions to factors such as affordable fee structures, experienced faculty members, strong academic standards and the availability of career-focused programmes aligned with current industry requirements.
Officials stated that the counselling process will continue in multiple phases. Admissions will be finalised based on merit, reservation policies and the availability of seats. Necessary arrangements have been put in place to ensure that the entire process remains smooth, transparent and student-friendly.
