4 die in Kathua cloudburst, rains disrupt live in many states

Kathua (Jammu and Kashmir)

A cloudburst in Kathua district has left four people dead, damaged a railway track, the national highway, and the local police station, while flash floods and a landslide in Jodh village have trapped six people and washed away several connecting roads, officials said.

Speaking about the situation in Jodh village, Deputy Commissioner Kathua Rajesh Sharma said rescue teams are on the spot and operations are underway.

Earlier, Union Minister Jitendra Singh said police, military and civil administration teams are carrying out rescue operations, and the situation is being closely monitored.

In a post on X, Jitendra Singh wrote, "Spoken to SSP Kathua Sh Shobhit Saxena after receiving information about a cloud burst in the Janglote area. 4 Casualties reported. In addition, damage has occurred to Railway track, National Highway while Police Station Kathua has been affected."

Himachal Pradesh

Heavy rains continue to wreak havoc across Himachal Pradesh, severely disrupting roads, power, and water supply systems.

According to the Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (HPSDMA), as of Sunday morning, 361 roads, including three national highways, remain blocked, while 637 distribution transformers (DTRs) and 115 water supply schemes are disrupted.

The ongoing monsoon fury has claimed 261 lives since June 20, of which 136 people died in rain-related incidents such as landslides, flash floods, and house collapses, while 125 were killed in road accidents triggered by slippery conditions and poor visibility, according to SDMA.

Officials said that road connectivity has been hit the hardest in Mandi district with 201 blockages, including the strategic NH-03, followed by Kullu where 63 roads are closed due to landslides, including NH-305 at Khanag. Kinnaur also reported disruption on NH-05 at Tinku Nalla.

Haryana

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Tehsil-level Nowcast for Haryana and Punjab, predicting thunderstorms, lightning, and varying intensities of rainfall in several regions until noon on Sunday.

In Haryana, heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is expected in parts of Karnal, Indri, Thanesar, Nilokheri, Radaur, Barara, Jagadhri, and Chhachhrauli. Moderate rainfall with thunderstorm activity is likely over Gharaunda, Asandh, Kaithal, Narayangarh, Panchkula, Pehowa, Shahabad, Ambala, Chandigarh, Kalka, and nearby areas.

Light showers are also predicted for Bahadurgarh, Rohtak, Sonipat, Panipat, Jind, Kaithal, and adjoining regions.

In Punjab, moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning is expected in Patiala, Rajpura, Dera Bassi, Fatehgarh Sahib, Amloh, Mohali, Bassi Pathana, Chandigarh, Kharar, Rup Nagar, Balachaur, and Anandpur Sahib.

Uttarakhand

The State Emergency Operations Centre, Dehradun, on Sunday advised the District Magistrates of Dehradun, Bageshwar, Chamoli, Champawat, Pithoragarh, Rudraprayag, Tehri and Uttarkashi districts to take precautions, anticipating the risk of waterlogging and floods due to heavy rainfall.

The State Emergency Operations Centre, in an official letter, advised the authorities to keep the traffic controlled while maintaining preparedness and security at every level. In case of any motor road getting obstructed, NH PWD, PMGSY, ADB, BRO, WB, CPWD, etc. will ensure its immediate opening.

In case of any disaster/accident, immediate action should be taken on the spot, and information should be exchanged immediately. All the officers and departmental nodal officers nominated for disaster management IRS system will remain on high alert, the letter said.

Maharashtra

Several parts of the Mumbai and Thane districts of Maharashtra witnessed waterlogging amid heavy rainfall on Sunday morning.

In Mumbai, parts of Mahim were affected by waterlogging.

Following incessant downpour, the water level of the Mithi River in Mumbai has risen.

Meanwhile, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a flash flood alert for Sunday in Maharashtra's Konkan, including Mumbai.
