Renowned engineer E Sreedharan on Monday inaugurated an office in Ponnani for a proposed high-speed rail corridor in Kerala, running from Thiruvananthapuram to Kannur with speeds up to 200 kmph.

The 93-year-old, celebrated for his work on the Delhi Metro and Konkan Railway, expressed confidence in obtaining central government approval despite the corridor not being included in the Union Budget 2026-27. He said the project will be implemented by the Railway Ministry after preparation of a detailed project report (DPR) and local consultations.

Sreedharan noted that field surveys are expected to start in April and be completed by June 1. He emphasized community engagement and careful planning of stations, whether elevated or underground, while avoiding disruption to locals.
