Emmanuel Macron on Thursday underscored that free speech must be anchored in respect, transparency and equality, while describing the India–France partnership as being at its “highest point”.

Speaking on the sidelines of the India AI Impact Summit 2026, the French President clarified his position on free expression, saying his remarks had often been quoted selectively. He stressed that genuine free speech implies mutual listening and an equal exchange of views.

“Free speech means I will listen to you, you will listen to me, and we are in an equal relationship,” Macron said.

He criticised certain practices in the digital space, arguing that speech driven by opaque algorithms, political bias or hidden agendas cannot be equated with democratic free expression. He also warned against the unchecked spread of hate speech and racism online, saying such an environment resembles “a jungle” rather than a democracy.

“I really believe in free speech based on respect and transparency because this is the free speech in a democracy,” he added.

India–France Ties at a High Point

Turning to bilateral relations, Macron said cooperation between India and France has reached a new peak and both countries are keen to expand collaboration further, particularly in areas such as technology, innovation and strategic sectors.

He noted that he has invited Narendra Modi for a state visit to France in June, where the Indian Prime Minister will attend the G7 Summit as a special guest. Macron said Modi would participate in his capacity as president of BRICS.

The French President also confirmed that he has accepted an invitation from Prime Minister Modi to visit India next year, signalling continued high-level engagement between the two nations.
