Shimla
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Monday inaugurated a major infrastructure initiative worth Rs 246 crore aimed at upgrading Shimla's utility network through an integrated underground duct system.
According to an official statement, the project is designed to modernise essential civic infrastructure, improve the city's appearance and provide greater convenience to residents and visitors.
The proposed utility corridor will cover key stretches, including Chotta Shimla to Willy Park via Chaura Maidan, Lok Bhavan to Oakover, and the Sher-e-Punjab to CTO Chowk route through Lower Bazar.
Once completed, the underground network will enable organised installation and maintenance of various utility services while reducing the need for repeated road excavation. Authorities believe the project will significantly enhance the visual appeal and efficiency of the state capital.
Speaking on the occasion, Sukhu said the state government remains committed to creating sustainable, people-centric urban infrastructure. He noted that the underground duct system would streamline service delivery and minimise disruptions caused by frequent repair and maintenance work.
The chief minister also highlighted plans to relocate overhead cables beneath the ground, a move aimed at improving Shimla's aesthetics and offering a better experience to both residents and tourists.
He said the initiative would not only strengthen the city's civic infrastructure but also support tourism by preserving Shimla's heritage character and scenic charm.
