The judicial commission probing the deaths caused by contaminated drinking water in Indore has issued a public notice inviting people to submit evidence, documents, and other relevant material connected to the case by February 28.
Headed by former High Court judge Justice Sushil Kumar Gupta, the commission is examining the circumstances surrounding the water contamination incident reported from Bhagirathpura in the last week of December. Its mandate includes determining the source of contamination, assessing medical consequences, loss of lives, possible administrative lapses, responsibility fixation, and suggesting remedial measures.
According to an official release, residents of Bhagirathpura and nearby localities, affected families, public representatives, doctors, hospitals, social organisations, contractors, government officers and staff, as well as any other individuals or entities possessing relevant information, have been asked to submit their material to the Judicial Inquiry Commission’s office within the stipulated period.
The release said the commission would accept complaints related to drinking water contamination in the area, medical records of affected patients, death certificates, photographs and video footage showing leakages in water pipelines or sewage ingress, as well as tender documents, work orders, and inspection reports linked to water supply projects.
Meanwhile, a panel of experts from the Government Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College conducted a death audit of those who died during the outbreak of vomiting and diarrhoea that followed the consumption of contaminated water in Bhagirathpura. The Madhya Pradesh government submitted the committee’s findings to the Indore bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court on January 27.
The audit report indicated that the deaths of 16 people in the locality could be associated with the waterborne outbreak.
