When two years ago Gul Yasmina’s family moved to Srinagar from their native land of Gurez in north Kashmir, this 13-year-old was shocked to see the city’s garbage all around. Having lived in the beautiful and Natural scenic splendor of Gurez, a valley located right on the line of control in Kashmir, Yasmina wondered why plastic bittles, bags and cartons are seen everywhere in Srinagar.

Instead of cribbing and being cynical, Yasmina decided to help the situation. She made bricks with the plastic waste.

"There is garbage everywhere in the valley," she says. It consists mostly of disposable plastic bottles and wrappers. The single use plastic is non-biodegradable and needs to be dealt with to protect our environment. So I came up with the idea of making Echo Brick,” Yasmina said.

The plastic bricks have become popular in Europe.

Yasmina adds, "I initially made tables out of eco-bricks and sent these to experts to test their usefulness." I made a few more items from single use plastic and presented them to Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on the occasion of World Environment Day. ,

Yasmina said that environmental bricks are more durable than locally used terracotta bricks. These have life of over 2000 years. We can initially build huts and other small buds in villages with these ecological bricks.

Yasmina’s bricks are different from bricks made in other countries in their hardness. Environmental bricks can be used to make benches and walls in public parks.

Yasmina said that environmental bricks are very suitable for the cold climate of Kashmir, where the temperature drops below zero in winter.

"We get very cold in the winter," she says. Environmental bricks are perfect for such extreme weather. These bricks provide heat in extreme weather and stay cool in summer.

Yasmina said she would create awareness about the use of environmental bricks in Kashmir to popularize them. "I want to get some help from the government to create awareness about environmental bricks," he said. I plan to make furniture and other items from these environmental bricks so that they can be presented to the public.
