1.6 lakh voters added to J-K rolls in annual revision

Jammu

More than 1.60 lakh voters were added to the electoral rolls in Jammu and Kashmir during the recent Special Summary Revision (SSR), while 67,690 names were deleted and 2.29 lakh corrections were made, according to official data.

The data showed that Jammu district recorded the highest number of deletions, including duplicate and shifted entries, during the annual revision exercise.

According to the district-wise voter enrolment figures, Jammu district has the highest number of electors at 11,89,555, followed by Srinagar district with 7,53,222 voters and Baramulla district with 7,20,500 voters.

Srinagar recorded the highest number of additions at 30,077, followed by Jammu with 16,855 and Baramulla with 11,854.

In terms of deletions, Jammu topped the list with 10,430, followed by Budgam district with 7,762 and Anantnag district with 5,241, the data showed.

Overall, the revision exercise recorded 1,60,974 additions, 67,690 deletions and 2,29,920 corrections across the Union Territory.

Among the deletions, 10,639 duplicate entries and 34,675 shifted entries were identified and removed. Jammu district recorded the highest number of shifted entries at 6,840, followed by Rajouri district with 4,791 and Anantnag with 3,745.

With these updates, the total electorate in Jammu and Kashmir now stands at 87,42,878, including 44,65,161 male voters, 42,77,568 female voters and 149 third-gender voters.

Officials said several initiatives are underway to achieve 100 per cent voter enrolment, especially among under-registered groups. These include the special summary revision conducted under the Representation of the People Act, which now allows four qualifying dates for voter registration each year — January 1, April 1, July 1 and October 1.

Authorities are also implementing the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) programme to promote voter awareness and participation across the Union Territory.

As part of the campaign, election authorities have conducted awareness drives including short videos, SMS alerts in English, Hindi and Urdu, newspaper advertisements, radio messages and television scrolls through Doordarshan stations in Jammu and Srinagar.

At the district level, officials have also organised outreach initiatives such as door-to-door visits by booth level officers, electoral literacy clubs in schools and colleges, and “Chunav Pathshalas” at polling stations to familiarise citizens with voting procedures.
