Sri Vijaya Puram
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said the Samudrika Naval Marine Museum in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is among the key destinations for those interested in Navy-related tourism.
In the 128th episode of ‘Mann Ki Baat’, Modi highlighted institutions that reflect India’s maritime heritage. “For those interested in Navy-related tourism, there are many places in our country where they can learn a lot. The Samudrika Naval Marine Museum in Sri Vijaya Puram, formerly known as Port Blair, is known for showcasing the rich history of the region,” he said.
Managed by the Indian Navy, the museum offers an in-depth view of the islands’ oceanic environment and attracts tourists, researchers and students.
Historians note that the Andaman and Nicobar Islands served as a strategic naval base under 11th-century Chola emperor Rajendra I during his attack on Srivijaya.
The museum features five galleries on marine biodiversity, tribal culture, naval history and the geography of the region.
