Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Wednesday lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi for completing 12 years in office, describing his tenure as one marked by unwavering commitment and a relentless effort to elevate India's standing on the global stage.

As Majhi travelled to New Delhi for official engagements, including a meeting with the prime minister, BJP leaders and party workers across Odisha organised special prayers at various temples, seeking Modi's well-being and long life.

Modi recently surpassed Jawaharlal Nehru's record of 4,399 days as India's longest-serving elected prime minister. While Nehru headed the government from Independence in 1947, general elections were first held only in 1952.

In Bhubaneswar, Odisha BJP president and MP Manmohan Samal, accompanied by senior party leaders, offered prayers and lit traditional lamps at the Lingaraj Temple to mark the occasion.

"Prime Minister Modi has devoted every single day of these 4,399 days to the service of the nation without taking a break," Samal said, describing his leadership as an example of complete dedication to public life.

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Kendrapara MP Baijayant Panda and several other BJP leaders also visited temples in different parts of the state to pray for the prime minister's health and continued leadership.

In a post on X, Majhi congratulated Modi on reaching what he termed a historic milestone.

"This achievement is much more than a numerical record. It reflects the enduring faith and confidence that the people of India have repeatedly placed in your leadership," the chief minister wrote.

He said Modi's years in office have been characterised by a clear vision, decisive governance and a steadfast commitment to national development.

"Under your leadership, India has emerged stronger, more self-assured and increasingly influential on the world stage, while remaining committed to improving the lives and aspirations of millions of citizens," Majhi stated.

The Odisha chief minister also invoked the blessings of Lord Jagannath for the prime minister's continued good health and strength.

"I pray that Mahaprabhu Jagannath blesses you with a long life, robust health and the energy to continue guiding the nation towards greater prosperity, global recognition and inclusive progress," he said.

Although former prime minister Indira Gandhi served in office for a cumulative period exceeding 14 years, her tenure was not continuous. By crossing Nehru's 4,399-day mark, Modi has become India's longest-serving elected prime minister.

Modi first assumed office on May 26, 2014, following the BJP's sweeping electoral victory. He secured a stronger mandate in 2019 and began his second term on May 30 that year. His third consecutive term commenced on June 9, 2024.
