Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday spoke with the Amir of Kuwait, Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al Sabah, to discuss the deteriorating security situation in West Asia, with both leaders underlining the importance of diplomacy and restraint to restore peace and stability in the region.
According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), the two leaders exchanged views on the rapidly evolving developments in West Asia and emphasised the need to prevent further escalation.
During the conversation, Prime Minister Modi expressed India's deep concern over the rising tensions in the region and reiterated New Delhi's consistent position in favour of dialogue and peaceful resolution of conflicts.
"He stressed the importance of de-escalation, dialogue and diplomacy for the earliest restoration of peace and stability," the PMO said in its statement.
The prime minister also conveyed India's strong condemnation of attacks targeting Kuwait's sovereignty and territorial integrity, reaffirming the country's support for the Gulf nation's security and stability.
Modi thanked the Kuwaiti leadership, particularly the Amir, for ensuring the welfare and safety of the large Indian community residing in the country. He acknowledged the personal attention extended by Sheikh Meshal towards addressing the concerns of Indian nationals during the ongoing regional uncertainty.
The telephonic exchange assumes significance against the backdrop of heightened hostilities in West Asia following the intensifying conflict involving Israel and Iran.
The tensions have directly affected Kuwait in recent months. On June 3, an Indian national lost his life in an Iranian strike on Kuwait International Airport. Earlier, on March 30, another Indian citizen was killed in an attack on a power and water desalination facility in Kuwait.
