Nine members of the Maoist movement, including senior leader C Narayana Rao, surrendered before the police in Andhra Pradesh, Director General of Police Harish Kumar Gupta said on Monday.
Highlighting the development, the DGP asserted that Left Wing Extremism (LWE) has effectively ended in the state. He noted that the Centre had set a target to eliminate LWE by March 31, 2026, and said Andhra Pradesh police had played a significant role in achieving this objective.
According to officials, Rao served as the secretary of the Andhra-Odisha Border (AOB) region and had been involved in Maoist activities for over three decades.
Gupta said the police had intensified efforts over the past two years, including counter-insurgency operations carried out by specialised units such as the Greyhounds, alongside initiatives encouraging Maoists to surrender and reintegrate into society.
He added that a sustained combination of security action and outreach programmes led to recent developments, including encounters and voluntary surrenders.
