In response to a sharp escalation in hostilities from Pakistan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi convened a high-level security meeting on Friday at his official residence. The meeting brought together the country's top defense and security leadership, including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, and the chiefs of the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Defence Secretary R.K. Singh also attended the closed-door session.
The meeting came in the wake of a coordinated drone and missile attack launched from Pakistan across India’s western border on Thursday night. According to Indian defense officials, between 300 and 400 drones were deployed by the Pakistani military, with infiltration attempts recorded at over 36 locations. Many of the drones were intercepted by India’s air defense systems, notably the S-400 missile defense system, averting significant damage.
“This was a major escalation on the western front,” said Colonel Sophia Qureshi during a joint press briefing. “On the night of May 7–8, the Pakistani military violated Indian airspace multiple times, targeting military infrastructure and shelling across the Line of Control with high-caliber weapons.”
She noted that the drones used were Turkish-made 'Asisguard Songar' models, likely intended to test India's aerial defenses and collect reconnaissance data. Forensic analysis of the drone wreckage is currently underway.
Earlier in the day, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh conducted a comprehensive review of the security situation, following what officials described as Pakistan’s attempt to target not just military facilities but also civilian infrastructure.
The Ministry of External Affairs issued a strong condemnation. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated, “Pakistan’s provocative and aggressive actions were clearly intended to strike not just military targets but also civilian infrastructure and urban centers. The Indian Armed Forces have responded with discipline, proportionality, and effectiveness.”
He also dismissed Pakistan’s official denial of involvement as “absurd and dishonest,” calling it a further sign of moral and diplomatic deterioration.
