President Droupadi Murmu on Saturday expressed deep sorrow over a tragic road accident in Coimbatore district that claimed nine lives and left several others injured.
In a post on X, the President conveyed condolences to the bereaved families and wished a speedy recovery for those injured.
“Deeply saddened by the loss of lives in a tragic road accident in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and pray for the swift recovery of those injured,” her post read.
The accident took place in the Valparai hills when a tourist van carrying 13 passengers plunged into a gorge after reportedly losing control at a hairpin bend. According to police, the vehicle slipped from the 13th bend and fell down to the 9th bend.
The van, which was returning after sightseeing, was driven by a 21-year-old identified as Mohammed Fasith. It was carrying tourists from Perinthalmanna in Kerala when the mishap occurred.
Following the incident, police officials including the Deputy Superintendent of Police of Valparai rushed to the spot and supervised rescue operations.
A large-scale rescue effort was launched, with multiple ambulances deployed to transport the injured to nearby hospitals. Authorities confirmed that all injured passengers were shifted for treatment.
Further investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the accident.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed grief over the tragedy, offering condolences and praying for the recovery of the injured.
