A rusted mortar shell was recovered from a village on the outskirts of Jammu and later defused through a controlled explosion without causing any casualties or damage, officials said on Wednesday.

The unexploded ordnance was discovered in Kothey Sanian village in the Bishnah area by labourers engaged in filling the foundation of an under-construction house with soil.

After being alerted, security personnel and a bomb disposal squad reached the spot and secured the area.

The explosive device was subsequently shifted to an open location, where experts safely neutralised it through a controlled blast.
