In the near future, tourists may visit the India's renowned battlefields of Siachen and Galwan Valley on India's Western Front in Ladakh.

Though this proposal was always believed to be under consideration, Ladakh’s new Lieutenant Governor, Kavinder Gupta, recently said he intends to promote Siachen and Galwan Valley as tourist destinations, along with promoting adventure, spiritual, and religious tourism in the cold desert of India.

He said India’s newest Union territory would position its tourism policy as a complete package that blends thrill, tranquillity, and faith.

“I am determined to ensure that Ladakh not only showcases its breathtaking landscapes, but also its rich heritage, vibrant culture, and traditions before the world,” he added.

Earlier Ladakh Autonomous Hill Developmental Council (LAHDC) - the local self governing body - had asked the Ministry of Home Affairs to open Galwan for tourists.

Galwan Valley was the site of an intense skirmish between the Indian Army and the Chinese People’s Liberation Army in June 2020. While India lost 20 bravehearts who fought the Chinese with bare hands, as under the bilateral agreements, troops could not carry firearms, the Chinese lost far more troops - 40, as per sources - but did not disclose.

The Galwan standoff in June 2020 was a defining moment in India-China relations, showcasing the resilience and valour of the Indian Army. Sparked by China's aggressive attempts to alter the status quo along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Eastern Ladakh, the Indian Army stood firm in defending every inch of its territory. China's attempts to construct structures in disputed areas were met with resolute action as Indian troops dismantled their encroachments, asserting India’s sovereignty.

At present, the Galwan Valley is classified as a sensitive border area. Access is heavily restricted or even prohibited, depending on current military regulations.

Galwan Valley is situated about 274 km from Leh city, in the Western sector of the Line of Actual Control (LAC), along the border between India and China. The valley is surrounded by rugged terrain, including the Karakoram Range to the north. Known for its harsh climate and strategic military importance. The Galwan Valley is located near Aksai Chin, a disputed region between India and China.

It is named after Ghulam Rassul Galwan, a hardy Ladakhi adventurer and explorer who assisted many famed European explorers at the turn of the 19th century. Galwan is believed to be the first to cross the valley while trekking with the British in 1895.
