Jammu and Kashmir

Sonamarg in the Kashmir Valley experienced the first snowfall of the season on Sunday, transforming the popular tourist destination into a snow-covered landscape, while Srinagar continued to reel under an intense cold wave accompanied by dense fog during the morning hours.

In Sonamarg, located in Ganderbal district, fresh snowfall blanketed roads, vehicles, rooftops and open spaces, drawing enthusiastic responses from both locals and visitors. The region turned into a winter spectacle as tourists stepped out early to enjoy the pristine surroundings, engaging in snowball fights, leisurely walks and photography amid the falling snow.

Visitors expressed happiness at witnessing snowfall during their trip. A tourist from Assam said that experiencing snow was something they had hoped for before travelling to Kashmir. “When we stepped out of the hotel in the morning, it was very cold, so we had to wear extra layers and caps. Snowfall was expected, and it makes the trip more enjoyable for everyone,” the tourist said.

Another visitor from Punjab, identified as Gagan, said he has visited the region several times but did not witness snowfall last year. “I have been coming here often, but there was no snow or rain last year. This time, it feels like December snowfall may finally happen, which is wonderful. Light rain has already made Srinagar more pleasant,” he said, adding that the area remains safe and welcoming for tourists.

Meanwhile, Srinagar continued to experience severe winter conditions, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reporting a drop of nearly four degrees Celsius compared to December 20. The city remained enveloped in thick fog, particularly around Dal Lake, creating low visibility during early hours.

Despite the foggy conditions, daily activities such as shikara rides and sightseeing continued, lending Srinagar a distinctive winter charm. The cold wave is expected to persist over the coming days.
