Campaigning in the Lalgola Assembly constituency of Murshidabad district in West Bengal has increasingly centred around Dr Abdul Aziz, a relatively unknown figure in mainstream politics who is now drawing significant public attention. Moving through villages, markets and neighbourhood tea stalls, the candidate—often referred to simply as “Doctor Babu”—is attracting noticeable enthusiasm among voters.
Until recently, Abdul Aziz was known primarily as a medical practitioner serving local communities in a remote part of Murshidabad. With little prior political exposure, his sudden rise as a candidate has sparked curiosity across the constituency.
His candidature was announced at the start of the election process by Abhishek Banerjee, All India General Secretary of the All India Trinamool Congress. Political observers describe the move as both bold and strategic, reflecting the party’s attempt to project a fresh face beyond conventional political circles.
Meanwhile, opposition parties continue to rely on their organisational strength and established vote banks, keeping the contest competitive. As a result, the outcome remains uncertain.
What is evident, however, is that Dr Abdul Aziz has quickly become one of the most discussed candidates in the Lalgola constituency. His transition from a local doctor to a political contender has captured attention across political circles.
