Campaigning in the Lalgola Assembly constituency of Murshidabad district in West Bengal has increasingly centred around Dr Abdul Aziz, a relatively unknown figure in mainstream politics who is now drawing significant public attention. Moving through villages, markets and neighbourhood tea stalls, the candidate—often referred to simply as “Doctor Babu”—is attracting noticeable enthusiasm among voters.

Until recently, Abdul Aziz was known primarily as a medical practitioner serving local communities in a remote part of Murshidabad. With little prior political exposure, his sudden rise as a candidate has sparked curiosity across the constituency.

His candidature was announced at the start of the election process by Abhishek Banerjee, All India General Secretary of the All India Trinamool Congress. Political observers describe the move as both bold and strategic, reflecting the party’s attempt to project a fresh face beyond conventional political circles.

Party insiders indicate that Banerjee himself proposed Aziz’s name, citing his educational background, grassroots connect and approachable personality as key strengths suited to the constituency.

Dr Abdul Aziz on campaign trail

On the campaign trail, Aziz’s simple communication style and composed demeanour appear to be working in his favour. Many voters describe him as “more acceptable as a human being than as a politician”—a perception that supporters believe enhances his appeal.

However, his candidature has not been without controversy. Aziz is the son-in-law of Enamul Haque, a Trinamool leader who has faced allegations in the past. Opposition parties have raised this issue during campaigning, though his supporters argue that personal relationships should not define a candidate’s merit.

Despite this, political analysts suggest Aziz may hold a slight edge over his rivals, largely due to his image as an “outsider” and his longstanding association with local residents as a doctor. There is also a growing sentiment among voters that professionals entering politics could bring a more development-oriented perspective, particularly in areas such as healthcare, rural infrastructure and employment.

His popularity appears to be rising among younger voters as well, many of whom view him as a representative of a shift away from entrenched political narratives.

Meanwhile, opposition parties continue to rely on their organisational strength and established vote banks, keeping the contest competitive. As a result, the outcome remains uncertain.

What is evident, however, is that Dr Abdul Aziz has quickly become one of the most discussed candidates in the Lalgola constituency. His transition from a local doctor to a political contender has captured attention across political circles.
