Everything comes down to a decisive final group match for India in the AFC U17 Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2026 Qualifiers. The Blue Colts face Iran at the EKA Arena on Sunday, with the outcome set to determine who secures a spot in next year’s tournament, according to the All India Football Federation (AIFF).

India are currently third in Group D with four points from three outings. Lebanon, who have completed all four of their matches, sit second with six points, while Iran lead the table with seven points from three fixtures.

Only the group winners qualify directly, meaning India must beat Iran to advance; Iran need only a draw.

India opened their campaign with a 1–1 draw against Palestine, followed by a 3–1 win over Chinese Taipei. Their 0–2 loss to Lebanon, though disappointing, did not alter the qualification equation.

Despite the formidable challenge Iran pose, head coach Bibiano Fernandes said his squad is motivated and ready.

“Iran have shown their quality, and we respect them. But our boys understand that past results mean very little. What matters is who performs on the day,” Fernandes said on the AIFF website.

“We will approach the match with focus and belief.”

Iran’s own journey in the qualifiers has not been flawless, but they remain unbeaten at the top of the group, beating Chinese Taipei 5–0, drawing 1–1 with Lebanon, and defeating Palestine 3–1. Fernandes anticipates a physically demanding contest but insists India will stick to their plan.

“They are physical, direct, and intense. We must manage our defence and transitions well, and take advantage when we win the ball. But we also want to impose our style, not simply react,” he explained.

As the pressure mounts, the Indian coach is urging his players to stay composed.

“This isn’t the moment to think about consequences,” he said. “It’s the moment to focus on effort, unity, and playing with heart. Pressure is part of football, especially now. But I believe the boys will stay calm, trust each other, and fight together.”
