At the time of writing, Nikhat Zareen, the two-time world champion had confirmed a medal for India in the Asian Elite Boxing Championship when she defeated Phillipines's Xian Baguhin in the Quaterfinals of the ongoing tournament in Mangolia.
Nikhat is no stranger to the fame and victory as her name has come to symbolise struggle, courage, and success in Indian boxing.
The 29-year-old Nikhat from Nizamabad, Telangana, come from a modest family and through her grit and hard work has carved a distinct place for herself in the Indian boxing. Raised in a traditional Muslim family with three sisters, her journey was far from easy. Yet her strong resolve and the unwavering support of her father, Mohammad Jameel Ahmed, gave her the strength to confront every challenge.

Being a sportsperson, Nikhat's father introduced her to athletics. She initially stepped onto the running track and began competing in athletics.
A turning point came in her life when she noticed the near absence of girls in the boxing ring at a local stadium. She wondered why boxing was considered a sport only for boys. Thew feeluing triggered a determination within her to break the stereotype.Her transition from the track to the boxing ring could not happen withouyt her indomitable spirit.
She began training with her father and later sparred with boys at a local gym, where male dominance was the norm. She often faced taunts, but never gave up.
Nikhat believed that to improve, she needed to train with stronger opponents. She later joined the facilities of the Sports Authority of India in Visakhapatnam, where she trained under the guidance of Dronacharya Award–winning coach I. V. Rao.

Nikhat’s talent first shone at the national level in 2009 when she won the Sub-Junior National title. In 2011, she announced herself on the international stage by winning gold medals at the Junior and Youth World Championships—major milestones in her career.
Three years later, she added a silver medal at the Youth World Championship, signaling that India had found a new star in women’s boxing.
Her career, however, was not without ups and downs. She went through difficult phases marked by selection controversies and missed opportunities at major tournaments. Despite this, Nikhat never compromised on her goals. She continued to work relentlessly, strengthening herself mentally and physically. She believes that a true champion is one who maintains patience even during the toughest times.

Nikhat had made her international debut with a gold medal at the 2011 Junior World Championship, and since then she has consistently made her mark with powerful performances at national and international events. Today, she is regarded as one of India’s star boxers, having raised the tricolour repeatedly by winning gold medals for the country.
After winning gold at the World Boxing Cup 2025, Nikhat expressed that the medal would further boost her confidence. She said it was especially meaningful because she reached the final and won gold after a long gap. It was her first international gold since the Asian Games, which made the victory even more special. She expressed confidence that she would continue performing at the same level and keep winning medals for India.
Nikhat’s success outside the ring is also noteworthy. As of 2024, her estimated net worth is reported to be around ₹10–15 crore (approximately USD 1.2–1.8 million). Her income sources include victories at international tournaments, government cash awards from the World Championships and Commonwealth Games, and endorsement deals with brands such as NMDC Limited. For an athlete from a humble background, this highlights how sports can also be a path to financial empowerment.
