JMI's Prof Zahid Ashraf gets President's Visitors Award

In what is an honour for the Jamia Millia Islamia University of Delhi, 
 
New Delhi
Professor Mohammad Zahid Ashraf, head of the Department of Biotechnology, Jamia Milia islamia University of Delhi,has received the Distinguished Visitors Award from President Ram Nath Kovind.

He was given this award at the just concluded Visitor's Conference 2022 held at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
 
Jamia Vice Chancellor Prof Najma Akhtar was also present at the ceremony. Pro. Ashraf was awarded for his pioneering research on solving the mystery of blood clotting on exposure to hypoxia at high altitudes.
 
He was awarded Rs. 2.5 lakhs as prize money and a citation. Prof. Ashraf was selected for this honour from among 29 applications received in the Biology section. Pro. Ashraf’s contribution in the field of hypoxia which in turn becomes the cause of heart diseases is indeed pioneering.

Prof. Najma Akhtar, Vice-Chancellor, Jamia, who has recently been awarded the Padma Shri has Congratulated Prof Ashraf. She said this is one of the several achievements in the field of research by the university.
 
She said “It’s for the first time in the history of Jamia that many achievements are happening simultaneously. Pro. Ashraf's achievements will inspire other faculty members to pursue excellence in research along with academics."
 
The Vice-Chancellor further said that the University is committed to the mission of the Government of India to promote science education, research, and STEM. 
 
Prof Ashraf is an Elected Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, Allahabad, and the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore. He is a member of the prestigious Guha Research Council.

It is worth noting that this is the second time that a Professor of JMI has been awarded the Visitor's Award. Earlier in 2015, the Center for Theoretical Physics, JMI's Prof. The Cosmology and Astrophysics Research Group, headed by M. Sami, received the Visitor's Award for pioneering research in the area of Contemporary Issues in Astrophysics and Cosmology.
