Veteran Bengali actor Tamal Roy Choudhury passed away peacefully on Monday at his south Kolkata residence, family sources confirmed. He was 80 and succumbed to cardiac arrest in his sleep.

A stalwart of the Bengali theatre and film world, Roy Choudhury began his artistic journey on stage, a medium he remained passionately connected to throughout his life. While theatre was his first love, he became a familiar face on Bengali television and in films, winning the hearts of audiences with his memorable supporting roles.

From the mid-1990s, he regularly appeared in popular television serials, establishing himself as a dependable character actor. His filmography spanned both mainstream blockbusters and critically acclaimed projects, including “Challenge,” “Le Halua Le,” “Bindass,” “Amazon Obhijaan,” and “Chander Pahar.” He also left his mark in art-house cinema with films like “Jatiswar” and “Gorosthane Sabdhan.”

Health challenges had slowed his work in recent years, but colleagues remember him fondly for his warmth and generosity. Actor-politician Debdut Ghosh paid tribute on social media, recalling Roy Choudhury’s affectionate nature, mentorship to juniors, and ability to lighten tense moments with his wit.

“He was a wonderful person who loved long conversations and never hesitated to help others during work challenges,” Ghosh wrote, reflecting the kindness and humour that defined Roy Choudhury both on and off screen.

His passing marks the end of an era for Bengali theatre and cinema, leaving behind a legacy of talent, dedication, and warmth that will be remembered by generations of fans and colleagues.
