Hollywood veteran Meryl Streep has said she is “happy to represent” older women in leading roles as she returns to the big screen with the upcoming sequel The Devil Wears Prada 2.
Speaking at a press interaction in Japan alongside co-star Anne Hathaway, the Oscar-winning actor reflected on the limited visibility of older women in mainstream cinema. She noted that it is rare to see women in their late 70s playing prominent roles, adding with a laugh that she is pleased to represent that space.
Streep, who is set to reprise her iconic role as Miranda Priestly, observed that women over 50 often fade from prominence in film narratives and cultural conversations. She said it was encouraging to see such characters being written with continued influence and importance.
The sequel reunites much of the original 2006 cast, including Stanley Tucci and Emily Blunt, and is set 20 years after the events of the first film. The story reportedly follows Priestly as she navigates a changing publishing landscape while facing new professional challenges.

The sequel also introduces several new cast members, while retaining select roles from the original film. It is scheduled for theatrical release on May 1.
