The Gujarat government has disempanelled 49 hospitals in the past two years for irregularities in implementing the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, the state assembly was informed on Monday. Of these, 20 hospitals were later reinstated after meeting compliance norms, while 29 remain suspended.
Replying during Question Hour of the ongoing Budget session, Health Minister Praful Pansheriya said strict action is taken against hospitals that violate scheme rules and standard operating procedures (SOPs). His statement came in response to a question by Congress MLA Amit Chavda concerning alleged irregularities at a private hospital in Jamnagar.
According to the written reply submitted in the House, JCCC Hospital was found misusing government funds under the scheme amounting to Rs 8.69 lakh. A penalty of the same amount was imposed, while the concerned doctor, Dr Parth Vora, was suspended from performing operations under PM-JAY and reported to the Medical Council. The hospital was also suspended under the cardiology and cardiovascular thoracic surgery categories for violating empanelment guidelines.
Pansheriya highlighted that Gujarat maintains rigorous monitoring to prevent misuse of public funds under the flagship health insurance programme. Currently, 2.73 crore Ayushman cards are active in the state under PM-JAY and Mukhyamantri Amrutam Yojana, with over 57 lakh new cards issued in the last two years.
In 2024-25, 25.24 lakh new cards were approved, and claims worth Rs 3,666.53 crore were sanctioned for 13.40 lakh treatments. In 2025-26, 31.78 lakh new cards have been issued so far, with claims totaling Rs 3,568.96 crore for 14.15 lakh treatments. Overall, 27.55 lakh claims amounting to Rs 7,235.49 crore were settled in the past two years.

The minister reiterated that the government is committed to transparency and accountability, and any hospital found engaging in unnecessary procedures or breaching guidelines will face strict action.
