Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived here on Monday to attend BJP ideologue Syama Prasad Mookerjee's 125th birth anniversary celebrations, with the state government lining up a series of events to mark the day.

On a day-long visit to the West Bengal capital, Shah was received at the airport by West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, state BJP president Samik Bhattacharya and other ministers of the state cabinet.

He will first visit Mookerjee's ancestral residence in south Kolkata's Bhabanipur and pay floral tributes to the former Union minister and educationist.

Shah will then visit Eco Park in the eastern fringes of the metropolis, where he will perform the groundbreaking ceremony and lay the foundation stone for a proposed 125-foot statue of the Jana Sangh founder.

Later in the evening, Shah will attend a commemorative programme at the Biswa Bangla Mela Ground, where senior BJP leaders, party workers and supporters from across the state are expected to gather.

Besides participating in the commemorative events, the Union minister is expected to hold discussions with the state BJP leadership on organisational matters and the party's roadmap in West Bengal.
