Amit Shah on Monday said central security forces would remain deployed in West Bengal for at least seven days after the assembly elections, even if the Bharatiya Janata Party comes to power.

Addressing a gathering after leading a roadshow in Behala, where voting is scheduled in the second and final phase on April 29, Shah urged people to vote without fear.

He said voters should not worry about “goons” and added that the Election Commission of India had made extensive security arrangements. He also asserted that central forces would continue their deployment for a week after polling.

The roadshow, held on the last day of campaigning, was organised in support of BJP candidates contesting from Behala Purba and Behala Paschim.

Standing atop an open vehicle, Shah waved to supporters and showered flower petals on crowds gathered along the route.

Thousands of BJP workers and supporters carrying party flags and orange-green balloons lined the roads, raising slogans such as “Jai Shri Ram” and “Bharat Mata Ki Jai”.
