Christmas was celebrated across Jharkhand on Thursday with traditional fervour, as churches held special midnight prayers and devotees offered prayers for peace and prosperity.

Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar extended greetings on the occasion, describing Christmas as a symbol of love, harmony and brotherhood, and wished happiness and prosperity for all.

Chief Minister Hemant Soren said the life and teachings of Lord Jesus Christ inspire values of humanity, sacrifice and brotherhood.

“Christmas is a holy festival of love, compassion, peace and service. The life and message of Lord Jesus inspire us to embrace the values of humanity, sacrifice and brotherhood,” Soren said in a message, extending greetings and praying for happiness, good health and prosperity for all.

People queued outside churches from early morning to attend special prayers.

Midnight prayers were held at St Mary’s Cathedral in Ranchi in the presence of Metropolitan Archbishop Vincent Aind, who said Christmas conveys a strong message of peace and harmony.

“We must follow this message and stop divisions in the name of religion and caste. Our unity in diversity sets an example for the world,” he said.

Churches across the state were decorated with colourful lights and artefacts, while carols, hymns and prayers marked the celebrations.
