Rashida Naaz of Dhanbad, Jharkhand, has topped the state in the 12th (science stream) examination organised by the Jharkhand Academic Council (JAC) by scoring 489 out of 500 marks.
Rashida Naz's success is also special because she comes from a family of contract labourer.
She achieved top marks without coaching or tuition. Rashida focused on self-study, a disciplined routine, and learning through YouTube.
Rashida Naz's father, Mohammad Rustam Ansari, works as a contract labourer in a company in Chinakudi, Niamatpur, West Bengal. Her mother, Gulafsa Parveen, is a homemaker.
Rashida’s elder brother, Mohammad Junaid Ali, is pursuing a BCA and BA, while her elder sister, Kaniz Fatima, is preparing to become a teacher after completing her B.Ed. degree.
For Rashida, her sister is her role model, and she also wants to become a teacher.
Rashida travelled about seven kilometres daily by tempo to and from school. Despite all the hardships, she never compromised on her studies.
She kept herself off social media to focus on her studies. She believes that focus and discipline are essential for success.
Rashida told local media that her day begins with studies 4. On average, she studied for 8 hours. During the winter months, she would sometimes study until 1 a.m.
She set specific goals for each subject and practised to solve previous year question papers. She would contact her teachers via WhatsApp for help during self-study.
Rashida has a message for her peers and others: “If students complete their entire syllabus by November-December and then practice regularly, they are sure to be successful.”
Rashida's achievement brought joy to her family and school. Principal Arvind Kumar Pandey of DAV Plus Two High School, Pathardih, and teachers congratulated her and wished her a bright future.
Family members say that Rashida was serious about her studies from childhood and always focused on her goals.

Rashida Naaz has scored 98- 97 marks in all subjects except computer science.
