Chief Justice of India Surya Kant arrived in Ladakh on Friday for an official visit, becoming the first sitting CJI to tour the Union Territory, officials said.

As part of his itinerary, Justice Kant will inaugurate newly built district court complexes in Leh and Kargil, and visit forward areas to interact with troops stationed along the borders.

He was received in Leh by Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena and the Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, Arun Palli, along with other senior officials from the judiciary, administration, and armed forces.

The visit includes the inauguration of the Ladakh Legal Services Authority office and a large-scale legal awareness camp aimed at improving outreach and access to justice in the region.

Officials said the visit builds on discussions from the North Zone Conference held in Srinagar in July 2025, which focused on strengthening legal support for defence personnel and tribal communities.

Justice Kant is also expected to engage with Army personnel to better understand and address their legal concerns.

The visit is seen as a significant step towards enhancing judicial infrastructure and ensuring effective justice delivery in the remote and strategically important region of Ladakh.
