Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta and several ministers used public transport on Monday as part of the Delhi government’s ‘Metro Monday’ initiative aimed at encouraging fuel conservation and greater use of public transport.
The chief minister began her journey from her residence on Raj Niwas Marg and travelled by Metro to the ITO Metro station. She then boarded a Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) bus to reach the Delhi Secretariat.
Sharing her experience on X, Gupta said she once again chose the Metro and DTC bus to travel to the Secretariat and expressed satisfaction at seeing more residents opting for public transport in their daily lives.
“Every metro ride, bus journey and shared commute contributes to reducing traffic congestion, pollution and fuel consumption. A small effort can have a major national impact,” she said.
Speaker Vijender Gupta also travelled by Metro from his residence at Tilak Marg to the Delhi Legislative Assembly. During the journey, he interacted with commuters and stressed the importance of adopting environmentally sustainable modes of transport.
He said the initiative was inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal for fuel conservation and aims to encourage citizens to rely more on public transportation.
“The campaign seeks to promote sustainable urban mobility, reduce traffic congestion and increase public participation in eco-friendly practices,” the speaker said in a statement.
During his commute, Vijender Gupta changed trains at Rajiv Chowk Metro Station before proceeding to Vidhan Sabha Metro Station and then to the Assembly premises.
Meanwhile, Public Works Department Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh travelled by bicycle from his residence in Central Delhi to the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) headquarters at Palika Kendra on Sansad Marg to attend a council meeting.
Speaking about the initiative, Singh said all ministers, officials and government officers would use public transport on Mondays as part of the campaign.
“Since the NDMC office is close to my residence and I had an official meeting there, I chose to cycle. The more fuel we conserve, the better it will be for everyone,” he said.
